Howard, Paul

BIOGRAPHY

Original picture book artwork by Paul Howard is available for purchase from Images of Delight.

Paul Howard’s charming illustrations have won him acclaim from both the publishing industry and children across the world.

Paul was born at home in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, on April Fool’s day in 1967. His Dad passed out when his mum went into labour, so a neighbour welcomed a kicking and screaming baby Paul into the world!
Decades later, a grown-up Paul studied a Graphic Design course that specialized in illustration. After the course finished, Paul worked for a time at the Natural History Museum, mainly wheeling stuffed crocodiles around on a trolley, giving a lift to the odd school-child or pensioner. Oh, and he even broke some dinosaur bones by accident (ssshhh that’s a secret!)

Paul’s career in illustration began when he was asked by a friend to do some drawings for a book. Paul went on to illustrate another book…and another…and another. He soon left the museum to concentrate on illustration full-time.

Paul now lives in Belfast with his wife, three children and his ‘hairy baby’ – Tiggy – she’s a Jack Russell terrier who is very fond of sticks. Tiggy and Paul's children inspire him on a daily basis with their mad adventures and jokes. The house can sometimes get quite chaotic, so Paul likes nothing better than taking Tiggy out for a walk or sitting quietly drawing and painting. His house is also full of books. In fact, he described the family’s reading like a relay race – the books are passed like batons between the parents and from child to child. They often end up lost, behind the sofa or in the garden shed!

Paul enjoys reading Thomas the Tank Engine, Dr. Seuss, books by William Stieg, William Joyce, Helen Oxenbury and Jill Murphy. Paul delights in these authors’ perfect insight into the workings of a young family – they are so accurate in fact, that Paul’s beginning to suspect they are keeping hidden cameras somewhere…now, where are they…?
