FRANCESCA MARTIN

BIOGRAPHY

Francesca Martin had a happy childhood growing up in Tanzania in East Africa. Her family were often on the move and the young Francesca lived in seven different houses, roaming from Lake Victoria to Dar-es-Salaam on the coast. In her late teens she moved to London, where she did a degree in Design at Northern Polytechnic. She decided to stay and embarked on a career in Design in the middle sixties.

Her affection for Africa endures and is a big influence on her work today. Clever Tortoise was one of her favourites from a book of African tales given to her by the Ngoni people of Southern Tanzania. The Honey Hunters, shortlisted for the 1992 Kate Greenaway Medal, was also inspired by her African childhood.

Francesca is married with one daughter and lives in North West London
